A cheap alternative to a stretched canvass
I love painting and I have a lot of large walls to hang art but no budget to buy it so I research a cheap alternative and this is it! You will need: A sheet of 1/8” mason board (which is $15 at my local Home Hardware), 1x2 MDF board, wood putty and a staple gun and primer paint.
1. Cut your mason board to size. I cut the board in half then one of those halves in half again so my painting size is 2 paintings 2ftx4ft and one 4ftx4ft.
2. One the back side of the board (the rough side) measure your MDF boards out so you make a frame on the back of the board and put a length across the middle of the back too so it doesn’t buckle when its hung.
3. Staple the corners together and give the staples a wack with a hammer to make sure those suckers are down all the way
4. Now you can putty around the joins and over the staples. Once it’s dry give ita sand.
You are ready to prime! I use a water based indoor wall paint primer. (I’m not sure how much this costs as I had some leftover) I painted over the board and the MDF frame and left it to dry balancing on some books (I’m impatient so I painted it all at once and put the books under the board between the frame on the back) I needed to coats but I put it on fairly thick if you find you can still see the board so there is color coming through keep priming.
Once the primer is dry you are ready to create a masterpiece.
Happy painting!
